HVAC Permit Drawings Require More Than a Duct Layout

Toronto’s mechanical permit requirements combine layout information with calculations. The system has to be sized and documented around the building and the proposed equipment—not reverse-engineered from a contractor sketch after equipment has already been selected.

The core technical work can include heat loss and heat gain calculations, duct design calculations, mechanical ventilation design, equipment type/location/size and a floor-by-floor mechanical system layout.

Those pieces are connected. A capacity change affects airflow; airflow affects duct sizing; duct sizing affects routing; routing has to fit the architectural plan without creating avoidable conflicts with beams, stairs, ceilings or other building systems.

What We Need Before an HVAC Permit Drawing Set Can Be Finished

The most efficient HVAC permit projects usually begin with a current architectural base and enough information to define the system. For contractors and homeowners, the useful inputs are straightforward:

  • Current floor plans: the mechanical layout needs the actual room arrangement, levels and affected spaces.
  • Project type: new system, replacement, furnace relocation, addition, renovation, basement or other change.
  • Equipment information: proposed furnace, heat pump, air conditioner, HRV/ERV or other equipment when already selected.
  • Existing mechanical information: old HVAC drawings, visible duct routes, furnace-room photos and known constraints where the project modifies an existing house.

HVAC, Gas, Electrical and Plumbing Are Separate Responsibilities
